The Izhevsk Automobile Plant was built in the 1960s. Initially, only the Moskvich-412 cars were produced there (Moskvich-408 and Moskvich-434 were also produced for a short time).
Already in the early 1970s, Izhmash acquired its own models – despite the fact that they were based on the same Moscow M-412 sedan, they had unique bodies. These are the Izh-2125 (liftback), Izh-2715 (a van with a high cargo compartment that could hold more cargo than the Moskvich-434) and Izh-27151 (a pickup truck based on the Izh-2715).
In the 1980s, the plant updated the appearance of its cars and introduced a unified front end design for the entire model range. In this form, these machines were produced for a long time – until 1997, on an assembly line, and until the beginning of the 2000s – by additional assembly from remaining spare parts and kits.
Since 1990, Izhmash has also produced the rear-wheel drive five-door hatchback Izh-2126 "Oda" (unofficially known as the "Orbita"), which has been developed since 1977. This car began to be assembled in large quantities only in the late nineties and lasted until 2005, along with the Izh-21261 “Fabula” station wagon (production since 2004) and all-wheel drive versions.
Since 2002, Izhmash has been collecting VAZ cars. In 2011, the plant was completely transferred to the ownership of OJSC AVTOVAZ.
