The Izh-2715 van appeared as a result of reworking the Izh-6F project to fit existing technological capabilities. The cargo compartment no longer protruded from the sides, which made it possible to fit the body into the grips of an overhead conveyor. The van was actually a pickup truck with a “hood”, a hinged tailgate and a rear window in the driver's cab. The chassis from the Moskvich-412 passenger car without reinforcements was used.

Serial production of the Izh-2715 started in 1972 and lasted almost 30 years – the car was finally stopped producing only in 2001 (!). The only major modernization took place in the early 1980s, when the Izh-2715-01 modification entered the assembly line.

At the prototyping stage, the Izh-2715 did not have the triangular rear turn lights from the Moskvich-412IE, the sides of the cargo compartment had window-shaped understamping, and there were three longitudinal understampings on the roof. The shape of the cargo compartment is noticeably more rounded than that of real cars.

Early prototypes of the Izh-2715 (except the Izh-6F) were distinguished by the absence of stampings on the “cap” of the cargo compartment and under it. The rear direction indicators, borrowed from the Moskvich-412IE, were recessed on some prototypes, and there was a framed niche for the license plate. There were prototypes with the design of the front end from the AZLK's Moskvich and from the Izh-2125 Combi.
