The development of Izh-19-01 occurred at a time when the plant received a government order for a hatchback with a traditional rear-wheel drive layout based on the units of the Moskvich-412 car. The adjusted technical specifications, however, provided for the use of an engine with an increased volume (1600 cm³). According to the magazine "За рулём", this prototype also had the index 2126Э.

Under the leadership of designer Vladimir Savelyev, a new body was developed with an unusual shape of the side rear doors – as planned, they combined motifs of ancient Russian architecture with an emphasized safety cage. In addition, the door connectors faced the roof and for the first time curved glass was used in the prototypes of the Izhevsk Automobile Plant. Windows appeared in the rear pillars.

Only a few photos of the Izh-19-01 have survived, and one of them was taken nowadays – the vehicle was photographed in the outskirts of the plant in Izhevsk. Despite the fact that the prototype survived into the 21st century, it is still unknown what it looked like from the back (besides sketches) and where it now.
