In 1968, chief engineer Alexander Andronov approved at the ministry the technical design of a 1973-1975 car model with an increased wheelbase length, track width, spring rear suspension, and increased power engine. In 1968-1969, the first prototypes were built, which were assigned designations indicating the expected year of development – 3-5 (car model 1973-1975) and the series number.
These cars, at the insistence of Andronov, were a “big Moskvich-408”, which caused a conflict in the AZLK team – designers Igor Zaitsev and Leonid Leonov quit. As practice has shown, they were right – if the car looked good in the mock-up, the real running models turned out to be very “raw” and awkward in appearance, not to mention the fact that they lagged behind global trends in automotive design.
The first experimental series of the “Moskvich” of the “3-5” project were variants of the car with different locations of the battery, gas tank, spare wheel, different shapes of side members and other search options. Read more
