The 3-5-4 series was the last in the project developed under the leadership of chief designer Alexander Andronov. The exterior of the car still followed the concept of the “big Moskvich-408” – only minor cosmetic changes were made. Considering that the model was planned for mass production in 1973-1975, its design was clearly outdated. At the same time, the interior has been noticeably improved. During the development of this series, designer Igor Zaitsev returned to the AZLK (he left several years earlier in protest against the concept of the exterior).

Technically, this series absorbed all the best that AZLK engineers could offer – modified design of the spring rear suspension, 412 engine with increased power and a KP-9 gearbox. The internal body design was modified according the results of crash tests of cars of previous series.

By the time the 3-5-4 prototype was built, the industry index 2141 had been agreed upon for the new Moskvich.
