The first generation of experimental ZAZ-966 was developed in 1960-1961. Already in the summer of 1961, the first running model existed.
The creators of the new model wanted to bring it into a higher class compared to the ZAZ-965. Hence the increased dimensions and relatively rich styling. The design was developed based on the Chevrolet Corvair, which made the ZAZ-966 similar to the NSU Prinz IV, which was created at the same time.
Commercial production of the ZAZ-966 started in 1966, but the model was put on the assembly line only towards the end of the decade. It was soon replaced by a modernized version of the ZAZ-968.
From the technical specifications for the design of a minicar of the 1963−1964 model. The model has an unusual body glazing.
Unlike models No. 1 and No. 2, more “calm” body contours were used, without extreme solutions to the rear pillar. Certain features of this model can be seen in the prototype “Variant II”.
In the summer of 1961, the first two prototypes of the ZAZ-966 were produced. The exterior was distinguished by large, stylish rear lights and a somewhat pretentious shape of the rear pillar. At the same time, in these cars were already found the main outlines of the body, divided by a belt line similar to the Chevrolet Corvair, and door shapes, very similar to the future production version.
The second experimental series of ZAZ-966 appeared soon after the first and was distinguished by a “frowning” front end design. It is unknown how many cars were built – all known photographs seem to show the same example. No back photo found yet.
The creators of the ZAZ-966 clearly wanted to get away as far as possible from the image of the MZMA/ZAZ-965, but in the third experimental series they took a step in the opposite direction – it was reminiscent of the ZAZ-965 in terms of surface plasticity and stylistic solutions. One prototype is believed to have been built.
The fourth experimental series of ZAZ-966 was considered pre-production. The shapes of the rear pillar and roof were found on it, and various options for styling the front end were tested, including a false radiator grille similar to the serial one. But it had no common parts with the final version of the ZAZ-966. Read more
In 1964, the ZAZ-966 entered state testing. At least 3 cars of the new model took part in the run, including one with a front end design looks like the future ZAZ-968M model (1979). Read more
