Due to a lack of funding, in 1971 ZAZ did not build prototypes of the new models, but at the same time, engineers were working on a whole family of modular cars. It was planned that it would include 10 models, but only 3 of them were made: front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive "two-volume" cars were built in 1972, and a front-wheel drive "three-volume" car (sedan) was built in 1973.

An ultra-compact two-volume front-wheel drive car weighing only 800 kg. Dimensions – 3750x1580x1380 mm.

The 1972 prototype ZAZ-1103 had the same body as the base model ZAZ-1102, but it had all-wheel drive. Power was transmitted to the rear axle by bevel gears in the differential housing of the front axle.

The sedan in this family was produced a year later than the other prototypes. The number of seats in it increased from 4 to 5, the wheelbase was increased by 300 mm. This car existed only in a front-wheel drive version.
