The first small car in the Soviet Union, produced in a large series and sold en masse to private owners.

The external shape and power structure of the body, the design of the engine and all units were completely identical to the German Opel Kadett K38. But the cycle of design work necessary for production was carried out anew at OGK MZMA and German engineers. The general layout, body, chassis and engine were developed by designers A. F. Andronov, L. I. Belkin, N. I. Borisov, B. N. Vasiliev, I. A. Gladilin, B. D. Kirsanov, M. N. Kuperman, I. V. Novoselov, S. P. Tolpyshev, K. I. Faibisovich, I. K. Charnotsky, S. B. Chistozvonov, S. D. Churazov, U. Ya. Yablonsky and others.
