"Moskvich-2140" has been developed since the spring of 1972, initially under the name "Moskvich-412N".

The car differs from the "Moskvich-412" model in the new design of the front and rear parts of the body, a new interior, front disc brakes under the Girling license, improvements in the electrical system – a hazard lights, a heated rear window (only on some cars), two brightness modes for signal lighting.

New gearboxes and spring rear suspension were tested on "Moskvich-412N" prototypes, but they were not used for serial production.

The development of the Moskvich-2140 car began with the creation of a mock-up, where all the main design solutions were immediately found. At the same time, the model in the state in which it was captured by the factory photographer still had unfinished proportions.

The first prototype was manufactured in 1972. The external design of the car was generally similar to the production version, but there were also differences: the prototype had turn signal repeaters, the door handles resembled those of the VAZ-2101, and the interior was significantly different.

By 1974, Moskvich-2140 had acquired its serial appearance and preparations for production began. It was planned to put the car into production in 1975, but in fact the process dragged on until the beginning of 1976.

“Moskvich-2140” even before the start of production became the subject of numerous photo shoots. They were mainly made to attract foreign buyers – it was expected that the new model would boost the strongly fallen exports of Moskvich cars.
