The M-72 all-terrain passenger car was a reinforced Pobeda body on a new all-wheel drive chassis with modified GAZ-69 units. According to legend, he appeared at the insistence of Nikita Khrushchev.
The first prototype was manufactured by the end of 1954, and road tests were carried out at the same time. After finalizing the design, the model went into serial production, which lasted less than 3 years. For some time, the M-72 was assembled in parallel with the Volga (M-21). 4,677 copies were produced between 1955 and 1957.
After the Pobeda was discontinued, the M-72 was retired without replacement. Although the type provided for the development of a similar vehicle based on the M-21, in fact this did not happen.
